Career Prospects
Dental care is a crucial element of healthcare. This means there will always be strong demand for individuals with skills in this specialist area. There are also an increasing range of cosmetic dental treatments available, further increasing demand within the sector. And while dentists may be at the forefront of providing care, they couldn’t function effectively without reliable dental assistants.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dental assistants is expected to grow by 11% by 2030.
What do dental assistants do?
Working as a dental assistant is a hugely rewarding job. You have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a real difference to people’s quality of life. It is also a varied role. Essentially working as a dentist’s second pair of hands, you will perform tasks such as sterilizing dental instruments, passing instruments to the dentist as required during procedures, exposing dental radiographs, fabricating provisional crowns and taking impressions.
Regulations
The ICI course in Dental Assisting & Nursing is offered as a foundation studies course only. It is not designed to meet the regulations of any particular province. The profession is mainly self-regulated. Most provinces require individuals who wish to become dental assistants to be licensed. In order to become licensed, dental assistants will need to hold the National Dental Assisting Examination Board certificate. ICI does not offer this certificate. To find out what regulations exist in your province you can visit the CDAA. Dental Assisting is not regulated in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec and as a result, require no particular entrance qualification.
The course may be useful for existing dental nurses who wish to undertake professional development or those who wish to undertake a foundation studies program prior to undertaking future studies in dental nursing.
